AUDITION NOTICE

Audition Details

PuppetCo is auditioning adult performers for our upcoming production of

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show.

  • Cast Size: (4 Performers)
  • Cast Type: Ensemble / Multiple Roles
  • Dance Requirement: Movement
  • Vocal Requirement: None

We are looking for performers who possess great stage presence and a playful personality with a strong sense of movement. Our puppeteers for this production are storytellers and can be played by anyone. They should be adept at long passages without sounding repetitive or monotone. The tone should be warm and appealing to both children and adults alike. Each performer puppeteers multiple puppets or objects throughout the performance.

Due to the style of puppetry for this particular production, this show is a great opportunity and introduction for actors with strong movement who are interested in becoming puppeteers.

  • Rehearsals:  In person in Toronto from July 29 - August 16 (3 weeks), leading into the opening on August 17.  Rehearsal schedule will be slightly flexible based on availability.

  • Performance Dates: Saturdays and Sundays in Toronto from August 17 - October 27. No performances Aug 31-Sep 1 for Labour Day Weekend, or Oct 12-13 for Thanksgiving weekend.  Performances are 55 minutes, at 10am, 12pm, 2pm, and 4pm.

  • Vaccine Requirement: PuppetCo requires all performers and crew to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 in order to participate in its productions.

  • Compensation: Rehearsals are paid at $20 per hour. Show weeks are $800 per week.

  • Auditions:  Auditions will be by video submission only.  Read the following information, and complete your audition by Monday July 1 using the link below. You will be asked to upload your headshot and resume, along with 2 short video clips.

Video 1: A one-minute video of yourself bringing any household object to life. Your video should include your entire body in the frame, and demonstrate your ability to bring the object to life in multiple ways through your movement: the object being moved by you, the object being moved by a natural force (wind, water) and the object moving itself. For more clarity, this show does not require mouth-syncing puppetry, so we want to see more full body movement-based puppetry and want you to show a clear beginning, middle and end with the object.

Video 2: A one-minute video of you reading the provided excerpt (children’s story) in a way that demonstrates your ability to be warm and appealing, without being repetitive or monotonous.  This video should be zoomed to a “head and shoulders” view.  The excerpt is provided on the audition form.
